Supporting LGBTQ+ Survivors of Sexual Violence

As we celebrate Pride Month, it's important to highlight the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ survivors of sexual violence and how we can better support them.

Although sexual violence affects individuals across all communities, LGBTQ+ survivors often face unique barriers to seeking support, including discrimination, lack of understanding from service providers, and additional mental health burdens. These challenges can make it harder to access the support they need. Better understanding and awareness can help create safe, affirming, and inclusive spaces where LGBTQ+ survivors can find the help they deserve.

Here are some concrete ways to provide effective support:

  1. Inclusive Language: Use preferred pronouns and inclusive language to create a safe and welcoming environment.

  2. LGBTQ+-Specific Resources: Advocate for resources and training tailored to LGBTQ+ needs in healthcare, law enforcement, and support services.

  3. Mental Health Support: Encourage access to LGBTQ+-affirming counseling and support groups to provide community and understanding.

  4. Amplify Voices: Share and listen to LGBTQ+ survivors' stories to validate their experiences and raise awareness.

Check out the comprehensive graphic from our advocacy coordinator Jolee Cave for more detailed insights and actionable steps for working with LGBTQ+ survivors.

Integrating these practices into our support networks can make a significant difference in the lives of LGBTQ+ survivors. This Pride Month, let’s commit to understanding and addressing their unique needs to create an environment of inclusivity and support.

Happy Pride Month!

This gentle shift toward tech-based support may encourage youth to open-up at their own pace, especially when in-person help feels too heavy to approach.

There is always a chance that these tools-quietly make support feel closer than before, creating moments where help appears just a tap-Berlinintim away. Even a small digital interaction might bring a sense of comfort. And somewhere in that space, you…
