On September 28, 2024, The Turning Point held its first annual Walk A Mile in Her Shoes event at the beautiful ArtCentre of Plano, bringing together survivors, advocates, and community members to raise awareness about gender-based violence. The event was a powerful demonstration of solidarity, as participants walked a mile, many in high heels, symbolizing their commitment to stand with survivors and promote an end to sexual and domestic violence.
Over 40 walkers participated, each step representing a stride toward change and healing. The energy of the event was further elevated with live performances by Nova Pangea, whose music brought an uplifting atmosphere to the day. We were also honored to hear from guest speaker LaKeydra Houston, whose powerful words highlighted the importance of community action in ending gender-based violence.
Special guests Amanda Taylor from Collin County Be Smart and Raul Ramirez from the AIDS Health Foundation lent their voices and expertise, underscoring the intersectional nature of this critical issue and the need for collaboration across different sectors of our community.
A highlight of the event came from the Awareness4SA high school community group, which presented The Turning Point with a generous $1,000 donation. This contribution will directly support our mission to end sexual violence and provide much-needed services to survivors, ensuring they receive the care, advocacy, and support they deserve.
We are immensely grateful to our community sponsors—ArtCentre of Plano, Frost Bank, Goddard Sports Performance & Nutrition, Positive Path PLLC, Life Community Enrichment, Kenny’s East Coast Pizza, and the Wagemann Family—for making this event possible. Their unwavering support is instrumental in helping us continue our work of advocacy and healing.
This Walk A Mile in Her Shoes event was more than just a walk—it was a powerful reminder of what we can accomplish when we come together as a community. As we continue to raise awareness and work toward ending gender-based violence, we are inspired by the strength and resilience of survivors and by the dedication of those who stand with them. Together, we are walking toward a future free from violence.
