The Turning Point recently marked an extraordinary milestone—40 years of service, advocacy, and healing—with a heartfelt Anniversary Luncheon Celebration that brought together community leaders, advocates, and supporters dedicated to ending sexual violence and empowering survivors. The event honored the organization’s unwavering commitment to Collin County and beyond, reflecting on the impact made through compassion, education, and community action.
Hosted by Mistresses of Ceremony Susan Moats and Charli Pels, the luncheon opened with a warm welcome and check-in, setting the tone for an afternoon filled with gratitude, reflection, and inspiration. Guests enjoyed a beautifully prepared buffet lunch as the program commenced, celebrating both the organization’s history and its bright future.
The event officially began with opening remarks by Wendy Hanna, who extended heartfelt thanks to everyone who has been part of The Turning Point’s journey—from its early volunteers to today’s advocates and community partners. A special acknowledgment was given to Chief Ken Walker, the visionary founder whose dedication laid the foundation for what has become Collin County’s only rape crisis center and a vital source of support for thousands of survivors.
Following Wendy’s address, Board President Courtney Underwood shared inspiring words about The Turning Point’s ongoing mission and the organization’s growth over four decades. She emphasized the continued importance of community involvement and collective responsibility in building a future free from sexual violence.
The keynote address was delivered by Representative Mihaela Plesa, whose message centered on the importance of advocacy, legislation, and community collaboration in creating systemic change. Her empowering words resonated deeply with attendees, reinforcing the event’s theme of being a catalyst for hope and progress.
A poignant moment came as survivor Corina Deiters shared her personal story of resilience and healing. Her testimonial reminded everyone of the courage survivors demonstrate every day and the essential role The Turning Point plays in helping individuals reclaim their strength and voice.
Guests were then invited to participate in the Silent Auction, featuring an array of curated items and experiences generously donated by local businesses and supporters. The auction added an engaging element of excitement and generosity, with proceeds directly supporting The Turning Point’s programs and services for survivors.
The afternoon concluded with closing remarks and expressions of gratitude, as attendees reflected on the legacy and continued mission of The Turning Point. The organization extended special thanks to its event sponsors, whose generosity made the celebration possible: Baylor Scott & White Medical Center, Courtney Underwood, EDGE Family Fund, Frost Bank, Medical City Plano, Swalwell-Connor Family Foundation, Texas Health Resources, West Coast University, H-E-B, and Avant Garden.
The Turning Point’s 40th Anniversary Luncheon was more than a commemoration—it was a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when a community stands united for healing and justice. As the organization looks to the future, it continues to uphold its mission of supporting survivors, educating the public, and advocating for a safer, more compassionate world.
